It governs the treatment of turbid spit and pus swelling, and on the side it treats throat ache.
For coughing with chest fullness, cold shivers with rapid pulse, dry throat but no thirst, occasional spitting of putrid stinking turbid slime, and after long time the spitting of pus like rice porridge, it is lung abscess and jie geng tang governs.
Use after rupture of sores or abscess.
Jie geng, Platycodi radix is pungent dispersing of liver blood and the ministerial fire in the san jiao. It is pungent dispersing of the lungs. It is bitter draining of dampness and phlegm in the lungs.
Jie geng is bitter, warm and transforms stagnant phlegm. It opens the lid of the lungs and disperses the upper burner qi. As the Metal element is dispersed it will loosen its punishing grip on Wood. Meaning that the throat ache will lessen as blood begins to move.
Gan cao, Glycyrrhizae radix is sweet and neutral. it tonifies the middle burner qi and yin and moistens stomach and lung fluids. It clears heat from the lung body to protect the lung tissue.
Zhi gan cao is sweet and mildly warm and is always used processed in Shang Han Za Bing Lun formulas which is stir fried in honey. But now it is used non processed which clears heat by moderating the yang qi with sweet moderation.
